MSU COMIC ART SCHOLARSHIP

The application to our 2024 Michigan State University Comic Art Scholarship information is now available. Open to MSU students in the Comic Art Minor only, the winner this year will receive a $1,000 commission to create promotional artwork for Capital City Comic Con.

2024 Capital City Comic Con Art Scholarship

2024 saw the Sixth Annual Capital City Comic Con Art Scholarship, in conjunction with the MSU Comics Forum and the MSU Comic Art & Graphic Novel Minor.


The scholarship is offered exclusively to current students at Michigan State University to Encourage the study of comic art. One scholarship is awarded based on artistic merit of original artwork submissions as determined by a comprehensive jury.


Meet the recipient of the 2024 Capital City Comic Con Art Scholarship - Shreya Balla!


Shreya is a 19-year-old multimedia comic artist and illustrator from Canton, Michigan. She is currently a sophomore at Michigan State University studying environmental biology/plant biology with minors in comic art, sustainability studies, and graphic design. She is also a local art teacher and face painter at D&M Art Studios in Canton, MI. Her comic work is mostly autobiographical, but she loves to experiment with her style and is always learning new things. Most of her work is inspired by plants and wildlife. She loves nature, traveling, listening to music, and connecting with other artists.


Her exclusive 2024 convention piece will be available on posters, tees, and stickers, and serve as the cover of this year's program book! You will be able to purchase some of these items prior to the convention, and we will be selling them on site.


The recipient of the MSU Comic Art Scholarship is awarded:

  • A commission of $1000 to create a piece of original art inspired by Capital City Comic Con
  • A commemorative letter and certificate
  • A dedicated table at Capital City Comic Con to highlight and/or sell work


The scholarship is subject to the condition that the commissioned scholarship artwork and artist will be:

  • Featured as a dedicated press release from Capital City Comic Con to local media
  • Featured as Official Capital City Comic Con Commemorative Art for the event
  • Featured in event program and promotional materials
  • Featured on web and social media
  • Reproduced as 11 x 17 digital prints and sold as official Capital City Comic Con artwork to benefit the scholarship fund
