Mark Bagley, 2017 Guest of Honor

Capital City Comic Con is beyond thrilled to announce Mark Bagley as Guest of Honor for the 2017 Capital City Comic Con.

Mark has been a professional artist for 30 years. After winning the Marvel Try-Out contest at the age of 27, he began his career working on various New Universe titles while still holding down a full time job at Lockheed as a technical illustrator. A year and a half later, he left Lockheed to work to pursue his career in comics.

Mark has worked primarily for Marvel comics, on such titles as The New Warriors, Thunderbolts, The Incredible Hulk, the X-Men and the Fantastic Four. Mark is best known for his long runs on both Amazing Spider-Man, and his record-setting run on Ultimate Spider-Man with Brian Bendis. He is currently drawing The Scarlet Spider with Peter David.

Mark lives in Georgia with his amazing wife Pattie, his daughter Angie, and the three geeklings, his grandkids (yes, Mark HAS been around a while), Mark, Patricia and Ronan.

Special Guest Artist Jason Howard Returns

Capital City Comic Con is thrilled to announce the return of artist Jason Howard as special guest.

Jason Howard is a creator, writer and artist who has collaborated with some of the top talent in the comics. He co-created Super Dinosaur and The Astounding Wolf-Man with writer Robert Kirkman, published by Image/Skybound

Currently, Jason draws Trees, a science fiction series from Image comics that he co-created with writer Warren Ellis. Prior to that, Jason and Warren collaborated on the webcomic Scatterlands. He also wrote and drew the Sea Bear half of the cult hit comic Sea Bear and Grizzly Shark.

While Jason is best known for his creator owned work, he has also worked on projects for IDW Publishing’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic, as well as Marvel Comics and DC Comics.

Christy Hans named 2017 Scholarship Recipient, Official Art Unveiled

Capital City Comic Con is pleased to name Christy Hans as the recipient of the second annual Capital City Comic Con Original Art Scholarship in Comic Studies.

Christy Hans is working towards her BFA at Michigan State University with a minor in comic book illustration. She has a long history in independent comics, having been published in anthologies like Comics Obscure. Christy is also the writer for the web comic Orc Quest. Her other artistic endeavors include ceramics, pottery, and water color painting. When she is not drawing or covered in clay, she enjoys playing video games, weaving, or knitting.

As part of the scholarship, Christy has created the Official Artwork for the 2017 Capital City Comic Con. We are very proud to unveil her work below:

Capital City Comic Con established the scholarship to encourage the study of comic art and is currently offered exclusively to current students at Michigan State University.

Christy’s art will be featured at the 2017 Capital City Comic Con on Saturday, August 26 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. where she will have an artist space. Christy will also officially be recognized as Original Art Scholarship in Comic Studies recipient during a presentation on the Main Stage.

Ryan Claytor Returns as Special Guest and Presenter

Capital City Comic Con is pleased to welcome back creator Ryan Claytor as special guest and presenter at the 2017 Capital City Comic Con.

Ryan Claytor is an Assistant Professor at Michigan State University where he teaches Comics Studio courses, recently developed Comic Art and Graphic Novel Minor, directs the annual MSU Comics Forum, and is the host and producer of the MSU Comic Art and Graphic Novel Podcast.

In 2007, he earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from San Diego State University with an emphasis in multimedia, researching autobiography in comics. Claytor’s achievements have included four S.P.A.C.E. (Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo) Prizes for his work in comics, a Cartoonist in Residence position at the Cartoon Art Museum, visiting lecturerships at the Dallas Museum of Art , The Center for Cartoon Studies, and The Savannah College of Art and Design, an internship with Marvel Comics, and judging the Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailing Award. In 2009, Claytor had a featured exhibition of his work in San Francisco’s Cartoon Art Museum and began teaching the first “Comics and Visual Narrative” course in Michigan State University‘s history.

As a creator, Claytor is most widely known for his self-published, autobiographical, comic book series And Then One Day. Although the series has undergone several format changes and incarnations since its inception in 2004, And Then One Day readers are consistently treated to Claytor’s thoughtful and entertaining approach to autobiographical comics immaculately packaged with a designer’s eye for production detail.

Capital City Comic Con Names Scholarship Recipient, Unveils Official 2016 Art

Capital City Comic Con is pleased to name Grace Fish as the recipient of the first annual Capital City Comic Con Original Art Scholarship in Comic Studies.

FishHeadshot Grace Fish is a student at Michigan State University. She has been drawing and writing all her life, and hopes to someday combine these two passions by creating full-length graphic novels. When she is not drawing, she likes to read and spend time with her pet chickens.

As part of the scholarship, Grace has created the Official Artwork for the 2016 Capital City Comic Con capturing the spirit of the event, which we are very proud to unveil:

Capital City Comic Con Welcomes Special Guest Author Adam Bray

Capital City Comic Con is pleased to welcome special guest Adam Bray to the 2016 event!

Adam Bray is the author of “Star Wars Rebels: The Visual Guide” (both seasons), and co-author of “Ultimate Star Wars”, “Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know”, and “LEGO Star Wars: Chronicles of the Force”. His newest book, “Marvel: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know”, was released on August 2. He is a frequent contributor to StarWars.com. and just returned from an appearance at Star Wars Celebration Europe in London last month.

Capital City Comic Con Welcomes Special Guest Artist Ryan Stegman

Capital City Comic Con is pleased to welcome artist Ryan Stegman as a special guest.

ryan-stegman-headshot Ryan Stegman was born in a drafty stable near Detroit. Ryan picked up crayons and drew on a wall; he was 18 years old. Shortly thereafter, he learned about pencils and paper. He was happy, as were his parents. After being “released” he decided that drawing comics was a good idea.

He got all of his horrible drawings out of the way (well, most of them) and then got hired to do covers for Markosia including Starship Troopers and Midnight Kiss. He then found himself at Marvel working as the penciller and inker for the series Magician Apprentice in which he contributed from 2006-2009.

Ryan signed an exclusivity agreement with Marvel in 2010. Ryan did various work for Marvel for titles such as Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Sif, and X-23 before his memorable work on the “Man Hunt” series for She-Hulks.

In 2011, Ryan did work on the Fear Itself: Deadpool series before becoming an artist for The Amazing Spider-Man series as well as assorted off-shoots. Ryan also drew for Superior Spider-Man and Scarlet Spider series during that time, both of which having direct ties to the death of Peter Parker. ASM1b_Litho

Ryan has also contributed to numerous other Marvel series, including Fantastic Four, Avengers Vs. X-Men, and Moon Knight. His most recent work is included in the “Rogue Logan” series for Wolverine.

His most recent work includes Inhumans and Uncanny Avengers. Due to the restraints of a bulky ankle bracelet and poor hygiene, he is forced to stay indoors and draw.
