Hello C4 fans! My name is Chris Allen and I’m the event producer for the FIRST EVER Lansing Maker Faire. What is a Maker Faire, you ask? Maker Faire is a gathering of fascinating, curious people who enjoy learning and who love sharing what they can do. From engineers to artists to scientists to crafters, Maker Faire is a venue for these “makers” to show hobbies, experiments, projects. Are cosplayers makers? If they make their own costumes, they are!
The Lansing Maker Faire (LMF) is trying to make a splash in the world of Maker Faires by focusing on topics that sometimes get left out – like fashion. Modern fashion designers are no stranger to technology and innovation, so this year’s event will include a “Hack the Runway” design challenge. The goal of this competition is to introduce LMF attendees to talented local designers who use cutting edge technology in their designs.
We would love to see some creative, wearable technology submissions C4 fans and cosplayers. The Grand Prize includes a six-month membership to The Runway (Lansing), start up funding, laser cutting services, and other in-kind services. Great deal, right? If you’ve always dreamed of professionalizing your creation process or starting your own cosplay or design empire – now is your chance to get started!
Qualifications for submissions:
- Must be 16 years of age or older
- Design must have some type of technology integrated into the piece (3D printing, LED lights, or other visible technology)
- Designer must have a runway-wearable piece to present, but a retail-ready piece is not required for the showcase
- Designer must be available on Saturday, April 29th and Sunday, April 30th for showcase and runway show during the LMF
If you’re interested in participating (and we hope you are!), you can find more information and apply online at lansing.makerfaire.com. If you think LMF sounds great but don’t fancy yourself a designer, there are opportunities to volunteer at the event – or just attend as a guest! Admission will be FREE, thanks in part to our generous sponsors Make:, TinkrLab, the Mini Maker Foundation, TechSmith, and Spartan Innovations.
