According to the 2012 census, more than 90,000 adults in the Greater Lansing region are functionally illiterate. In an effort to provide assistance for the community, Capital City Comic Con and The Reading People of the Capital Area Literacy Coalition (CALC) have announced a partnership to combat the region’s illiteracy. As part of the partnership, Capital City Comic Con will support CALC with a portion of the proceeds from the 2016 event.
“As comic book fans, it’s easy to take for granted the time and money we spend reading about our favorite heroes. While this is a simple pleasure for some, reading can seem impossible for thousands in our own community,” said James Curtis, co-founder of Capital City Comic Con. “We’re incredibly proud to support the Capital Area Literacy Coalition, a group of real-life heroes who dedicate their lives to helping children and adults turn the impossible into reality.”
Capital Area Literacy Coalition, also known as The Reading People, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has helped children and adults in the capital area and throughout the state of Michigan learn to read, write and speak English with an ultimate goal of helping individuals achieve self-sufficiency for more than 30 years.
“Teaching individuals to read can be a truly humbling and inspiring experience, where even the smallest step can be a major victory,” said Lois A. Bader, PhD, executive director of CALC, who founded the organization in 1985. “You cannot measure the joy of a father who is able to read a bedtime story to his child for the very first time.”
The Reading People provide free one-to-one instruction in reading and writing for children struggling in school, at-risk teens, and adults, tutoring to migrant and refugee families and English as a Second Language instruction.
“Our partnership with the Capital City Comic Con provides us with a unique opportunity to raise awareness and support for the people we strive to help every day,” said Dr. Bader.
The 2016 Capital City Comic Con will be held on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at the Breslin Center in East Lansing.
